Phantom

Loved our understudy Christine. Loved Carlotta - Both vocally beautiful and spot on. Raoul - eh Phantom - i felt this production could have used the actors natural handsome qualities. His handsomeness was hidden with a weird wig and a suit that looked too big on him. He also moved femininely. The phantom should have a masculine commanding presence. His voice was beautiful and absolutely commanding and masculine - the physical movements did not match the voice and sadly - i could not get into his character where I normally would be rooting for the musical genius psychopath. lol I loved the theatrics and the use of the stage. It still was a lovely performance over all.

Outstanding show!!

I was more impressed with the set design than the chandelier. Just LOVED how the columns turned and then voila, there was another set. I thought the lighting was a little dark. Was pretty close to the stage, but thought would have seen more with a little bit more light. The voices were incredible. So much range for Christine's character. The music was as I remembered; great. The live orchestra is always appreciated. The only downer was there was a young child sitting behind our group who kept talking during the performance. The adult with this girl didn't explain theater etiquette with this child. Unfortunate. Didn't want to make a scene, so I didn't turn around to ask if the child could just SHUT UP. It was irritating.

Phenominal

The new, revised Phantom's performance at Honolulu's Blaisdell Theater was the best theatrical performance I've ever seen in all of my life. Seriously. I'm a musical theater professional musician and often play with pit orchestra's for major productions. I've seen countless musical theater productions on Broadway, London's West End, and all over the US. We recently saw a wonderful production of Hamilton at Chicago's CIBC Theater. Still, the Phantom production at Honolulu's run-down, decrepit Blaisdell Center was perfection and spectacular. We saw Phantom 30 years ago at the Abramson Theater in LA, but the HNL production was 10 times better. We had center 6th row seats in both productions, directly under the chandelier. We could literally feel the heat from the pyrotechnics on stage! In fact, I covered my face several times to avoid concern for singed eyebrows, that did not happen. HNL's amazing cast, crew, and orchestra was nothing short of perfection. Mahalo to this touring company for a fantastic performance. I'm still excited, and it's been a couple of months later!
